High cholesterol

I was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol. It was a surprise because I try to eat healthy; expect for the odd "falling off the wagon". Of course, it should not have been a big surprise since my sister was diagnosed with high cholesterol a few years ago ad has been on medication ever since. There is a genetic component to high cholesterol. My doctor put me on a cholesterol blocking drug and my levels are almost normal; definitely much lower than before.

So, I have been trying to eat healthy and have been educating myself on cholesterol. I have been researching natural ways to combat high cholesterol. I am currently writing a series of articles on foods that lower cholesterol for HubPages.

There are many good foods that you can eat that will not raise your bad cholesterol and might raise your good cholesterol.

Nuts are very good for lowering cholesterol; however they are high in fat and should be eaten sparingly. Fatty fish is also good for lowering your cholesterol; it is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Fatty fish includes salmon, herring and sardines. It is recommended that you have two servings of fish a week for a healthy diet. All fruits and vegetables are also good to eat when you are trying to lower your cholesterol. Legumes are a good high-protein substitute for meat. Legumes include beans, lentils, and peas. There are also dairy alternatives that you can use instead of milk and eggs. There are many fake egg products out there and soy milk can be quite tasty. You also don't have to forgo dessert when you have high cholesterol; low-fat yogurts and sorbets can be as satisfying as ice cream. Oatmeal is also a good food that helps to lower your cholesterol. For even better cholesterol lowering benefits you can sprinkle flax seed on top.

As you can see, you don't have to give up having tasty food when you have a diagnosis of high cholesterol. You do have to do some research but once you know what you can eat it becomes easier.
