Me and Mary

I just finished watching the Oprah Show. She had most of the cast of The Mary Tyler Moore...all except Ted Baxter who has been dead for 12 years.

It reminded me just how much I loved that show when it was on. I never missed it. It was a great show for a young girl just finding her way in the world. A girl who was just coming to terms with what it was like to be female. Seeing a single, working woman on TV week after week really did help to change people's minds, I have no doubt about that.

The show touched me so much that I still remember the episodes. I began watching reruns of the show on DejaVu television here in Canada and discovered that I remembered every episode I watched. That didn't make any difference though; the shows were still funny and really not all that dated. The humour did not centre on the time of the show but on the characters. That has allowed to show to remain fresh and still funny.

I have been a fan of Mary Tyler Moore for years. I loved her on the Dick Van Dyke show when I was little. She just had perfect comedy timing and has always been able to be on an even plane with the likes of Dick Van Dyke and Ed Asner.

Oprah had recreated the WJM news room and Mary's first apartment on the stage. I was such a fan that I kept noticing the smallest inconsistencies. But, all in all it was fun. I would have liked them to have talked to them more; each person only got a few minutes to talk and they were all basically asked the same questions.

It was a good episode; Oprah does do cast reunions well and it's always interesting to see how people have changed after about 30 years.

Hi Susan,

I feel exactly the same way about Mary... not only was she a strong role model for me (when I didn't even realize i needed a role model) but she was just plumb funny! Those wry looks of hers crack me up every time.
cheers,
